ABOUT RACHEL

For as long as I can remember, I have been a performer. Being heavily involved in my high school's music program gave me a taste of performing in front of a larger audience, and I was not ready to give that up because of graduation!

I have also always been fascinated by media. Whether it was the TV or the radio, I wanted to know more about how it worked. More than that, I wanted to be the person that I was listening to; I wanted to be the voice and the face delivering news and meaningful content to the rest of the public.

When I discovered the Broadcasting: Radio Television & Film program, I realized that becoming a broadcast journalist was a real career option for me. It began with an internship at CISO Sunshine 89 during my last year of high school in my hometown of Orillia, Ontario. Combining my love of performing with my love for media, I seized every opportunity I could during my time at Niagara and have not looked back since.

I have since had the opportunity and privilege to work in multiple positions on CRNC 90.1 FM The Heat and Inside Niagara (TV Cogeco Niagara), co-write and co-host the FRAT (Film Radio Acting & Television) Awards, assist CHCH with national election coverage, and co-host the Niagara Falls Santa Claus Parade for TV Cogeco Niagara.

I have also had the honour of receiving the 90.1 FM The Heat Award in my first year, Best Inside Niagara On Air Personality Award in my second year, and Best This Week in Niagara Episode in my final year. Additionally, I received the National Student Award for Radio Newscast from the Broadcast Educators Association of Canada this past May. You can listen to that newscast here.

In Janurary and February I got to experience what it's like to work in a major market newsroom during a six-week Assignment Desk internship with Global Toronto. Click here to watch the story I put together with Global's professional team.

I am proud to have graduated as a Niagara Scholar with an Advanced Diploma this past June. Currently, I am reporting for Newstalk 610 CKTB in St. Catharines. To listen to some of my work with CKTB, click here.
